Shelly found Christ and was followed up by a trained lay person. Together they studied “A New Heart,” the follow up plan used by New Believer Concepts. Then she had to move to another state and after a time they lost touch. Two years later, Shelly sends an email. Here is part, “God has done amazing things in my life and life is good. …I’ve been so blessed with a great job and a beautiful home. ..We found a home church and we love going. I wanted you to know the seed you helped plant has been fruitful…and a lot is because of what you taught me in all those weeks of New Heart studies. God is number one in my life. I know I can do all things through Him!” My reaction? EUREKA! (A cry of joy or satisfaction when one finds or discovers something!).
Eureka! God’s plan is to use trained lay people to provide effective follow up (last Wednesday 15 lay teachers taught 15 students!). Lay people are doing one-on-one lessons in coffee shops, restaurants and homes all over the city. You want to do follow up with a new believer’s class? Great, but first use trained lay people to provide two months of one-on-one follow up, then bring in the new believer’s class. Eureka! We need to use lay people to provide follow up! Eureka! Skipping the laity in follow up explains why our follow up methods don’t work. Eureka! Call me and I’ll help you train your lay people, I really will!!!! Eureka!!!
Eureka! The Biggest Secret Ever!
This exclamation is far more than the motto of the state of California. It means a “cry of joy or satisfaction when one finds or discovers something.” When one considers all eternity, what really matters is what will last. “Eureka!” should be the cry when the church discovers the biggest secret ever. And what is this Eureka? That average lay people can be trained to provide effective follow up of new believers. No one else can do this effectively. It certainly is not the pastor’s job! He would never find the time to prepare sermons and cast vision! And a class of new believers could be called ghosts of new believers since they seldom attend!
