Amazing and Awesome!

It’s ok to overuse these words. They cover a lot of bases when we want to describe how great something is. So here I go. Numerous occasions call for us to say “amazing” or “awesome.” I certainly felt that way with the birth of my four sons, and the birth of my five granddaughters! And what about the announcement that my youngest son and his wife are expecting their first child? Double the amazing and awesome!

Some people may question whether amazing and awesome should describe my feelings 52 Wednesdays a year, for the last 13 years. Shouldn’t “amazing and awesome” be reserved for something much more special than feeling such feelings 52 times a year? Multiply that times 13 years and you get me saying amazing and awesome 676 times! What is so amazing and awesome? I’ll tell you what. Ordinary lay people providing follow up on new believers and new people every Wednesday night. Typically 15 people receive weekly one-on-one follow, up and they use every available space we can find: The nursery sitting room if it’s empty, the choir rehearsal room, the hallway, the pastors’ offices, the secretary’s offices, Sunday school classrooms, the preschool room, Starbucks! As the coordinator, I just walk around and hear the voices of teachers and students through closed doors as the Word is being taught one-on-one in the way God intended when Paul said that leadership should equip the saints for the building up of the body (Eph 4:11-12). I continue saying amazing when the teachers email the outcome of their one-on-one sessions: “Mary received Christ tonight. It was an amazing time!” “Francisco received Christ. We had such an awesome time!” “Maureen completed the third lesson and it was amazing.” “I had an amazing session with Yvette.” “Francis is the best student ever. So amazing!” “Finished with Eric tonight. So awesome! He wants to get baptized!” So how about that. The follow up teachers email the results of their sessions with words like amazing and awesome!!
